The former Uruguay international was facing mounting pressure ahead of Saturday’s Premier League fixture at the Stadium of Light, with reports in the English press suggesting that he faced the sack if Sunderland lost.

The Villans ran riot in the first half of the encounter, netting four goals to effectively end the match as a contest.

And, after meeting with Poyet on Monday to discuss his future, the decision was made to show the manager the Sunderland exit.

Sunderland chairman Ellis Short told the club’s official website:

“I would like to thank Gus for his endeavours during his time at the club, in particular last season’s ‘great escape’ and cup final appearance, which will live long in the memory of every Sunderland fan.

“Sadly, we have not made the progress that any of us had hoped for this season and we find ourselves battling, once again,at the wrong end of the table.”We have therefore made the difficult decision that a change is needed.”

Poyet, 47, joined the Black Cats in October 2013 following a stint at the Brighton & Hove Albion helm.
